Hoi An Ancient Town Walking Tour: Itinerary

Welcome to Hoi An! As a local, I’m thrilled to lead you through the mustard-yellow alleys of our “Living Museum.” This itinerary is designed to catch the town as it transitions from the quiet charm of the afternoon to the glowing magic of twilight.

A Journey Through Time & Art of a Trading Town

1. The Gateway: Japanese Covered Bridge (Chùa Cầu)

We begin at the town’s most iconic symbol. Built in the early 17th century by the Japanese merchant community, this bridge is unique because it houses a small temple inside with an interesting myth behind.

2. Merchant History: Tan Ky Old House

Tan Ky is one of the oldest and best-preserved merchant houses in town.

The Experience: You’ll see how the architecture handled the annual floods (look for the marks on the walls!) and admire the “Confucius Cup”—a ceramic masterpiece that teaches the lesson of moderation.

3. A Sip of Tradition: Mót Hoi An

Before we continue, we stop at a small stall on Tran Phu Street for a glass of Mót.

This isn’t just tea; it’s a herbal infusion of ginger, lemongrass, cinnamon, and chamomile, garnished with a lotus petal. It is incredibly refreshing and serves as the literal “taste” of Hoi An.

4. Spiritual Grandeur: Fujian Assembly Hall (Phuc Kien)

It is the most grand of the five assembly halls. Originally a traditional gathering place for the Fujian Chinese community, it later became a temple for the worship of Thien Hau, the Goddess of the Sea. There are other different deities that put a big spiritual impact onto Hoi An people.

What’s beyond are the intricate carvings of phoenixes and dragons, and the massive incense coils that hang from the ceiling, carrying prayers to the heavens.

5. Cultural Deep Dive: Museum & Art Performance

To round out our historical understanding, visit the Hoi An Folklore Museum. Here, you can see traditional handicrafts and the ways people have lived their lives for centuries in this old town.

We then head to the Hoi An Traditional Art Performance House. You’ll witness live folk music and the “Bai Choi” singing—a UNESCO-recognized art form that is part game, part theater, and entirely captivating.

The Grand Finale: Twilight on the Hoai River

As the sun begins to dip and the silk lanterns start to glow, we make our way to the riverbank.

Lantern Boating & “Hoa Đăng”

You board a small wooden sampan boat. As the rower gently glides through the water, the reflection of many lanterns creates a “galaxy” on the river’s surface.

During the boat ride, you light a Hoa Đăng (candle flower), make a silent wish, and gently release it onto the water.

This 15 minute boating has the best vantage point of the Japanese Bridge and the ancient rooftops as they transition into the night.
